The Leeds branch of the Council of Christians and Jews was formed in 1946. It was one of the earliest provincial branches to be created and it is the oldest interfaith organisation in Leeds, whose Jewish population is the third largest in the United Kingdom.
Its principal yearly event is the Annual Public Lecture (“APL”), usually held in the Autumn after the Jewish High Holy Days. The function generally takes place in in the presence of the Lord Mayor at the Leeds Civic Hall demonstrating the strong support of the Local Authority for the aims of CCJ.
Recent Speakers at the APL have included Lord Dyson (former Master of the Rolls), Sir Malcolm Rifkind (former Foreign Secretary), and Lord Mann of Holbeck Moor (formerly John Mann MP) the government’s Independent Advisor on antisemitism, and Lord Michael Howard.
There are other events throughout the year. Interesting and varied speakers and subjects together with the best attended function, a Concert involving the pupils of three local primary schools. The first Concert after lockdown is to be held in March 2024 and will be in front of a packed appreciative audience, largely consisting of proud parents and grandparents!
Since the onset of the pandemic, most meetings have been held by Zoom which have thus been available to members of CCJ wherever they live in the UK but some are still held in person.
We welcome new members. If you would like to be included on our lists please e-mail: email@example.com
