CCJ Statement on the University of BristolPosted Thu, 02/18/2021 - 09:10 by Katharine
CCJ stands with the University of Bristol Jewish Society following the most recent antisemitic comments by University of Bristol Professor David Miller, as reported in the press. We are especially concerned to hear that the President of the Bristol Jewish Society was subjected to online abuse in relation to this issue.
Universities cannot be havens for hate. At CCJ we are proud to work with Jewish students in Bristol, and our Student Leaders in Bristol have included Christians as well as Jews since 2016. We offer our full support in responding to this harassment and to tackling antisemitism on campus.
We also look forward to the dialogue which the University of Bristol has said they will have with concerned Jewish students. In particular, the university should consider how the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which the university adopted in 2019, can provide a framework for challenging antisemitism in this case. And we urge the university to continue providing support to any Jewish student experiencing antisemitic abuse.
