CCJ Statement on antisemitism concerns at the University of WarwickPosted Thu, 12/05/2019 - 15:58 by MCS
CCJ is disturbed by the recent comments made during a lecture at Warwick University. It is troubling that concerns about antisemitism were dismissed as being part of an “Israeli lobby”. This conspiracy theory seeks to whitewash incidents of antisemitism and prevent them from being taken seriously. It is appalling that such an antisemitic trope was taught as a statement of fact at a university.
The effect of trivialising antisemitism can be seen in the response of the university’s Ethnic Minorities Officer who reportedly claimed that the charge of antisemitism had been “fabricated” by the “Jewish community at Warwick”. Reports also suggest he claimed that it was a “conflict of interest” to reach out to Jewish students affected by this incident.
At a time of rising antisemitism on campus it is appalling to see the concerns dealt with in such a derisive way. It is vital that Jewish students have the support of their university in tackling antisemitism on campus. We hope that the university will undertake a full investigation and ensure that an effective complaints procedure exists which takes antisemitism seriously.
