CCJ Statement on Lord Mann’s report
Posted Wed, 12/21/2022 - 15:41 by LazzaroThe Council of Christians and Jews welcomes the report Anti-Jewish Hatred: Tackling Antisemitism in the UK 2023 -- Renewing the Commitment, which we were consulted on. In particular, we are grateful for the spotlight that the report shines on troubling trends on university campuses; the report notes that campuses were disproportionately affected by the spike in antisemitic incidents during the 2021 conflict in Israel and Gaza, for example, and renews calls that the welfare of Jewish students, and of all students, be of central concern to us all.
Concern for Jewish students and the protection of students of all faiths and none has been at the heart of our work since we founded the Campus Leadership Programme in 2016. Since then, we have trained more than 70 students to stand up to antisemitism and Islamophobia; how to conduct respectful debate over the conflicts in the Middle East; and more. We seek to work not just with faith societies but with Student Unions and university staff -- with all concerned with the about student welfare and religious observance.
As Jewish families celebrate Chanukah in their homes this week, and as many Christians prepare for Christmas, this report reminds us all to listen to one another where we disagree, and, above all, to stand together against all forms of prejudice and hate. We will disseminate the recommendations of this report, particularly as they pertain to universities, to our stakeholders and partners, in the hopes that we can all rededicate ourselves to the urgent task of overcoming prejudice.
